Margaret Whelan has been CEO of Whelan Advisory since 2014. In this role she provides strategic and financial counsel to leaders of both public and private companies in the U.S. and Canada. She is a seasoned executive and industry expert with a deep knowledge of industry drivers, players, valuation and financing alternatives. She serves on the boards of three companies: Mattamy Homes, John Burns Real Estate Consulting, and the Housing Innovation Alliance.
Whelan was a Managing Director and senior coverage partner in the Real Estate and Lodging group within the investment bank at JPMorgan from 2007 to 2013, advising clients on strategic and capital initiatives through the housing industry’s biggest boom and subsequent downturn. From 1997 to 2007, she worked at UBS as a Managing Director and highly regarded stock analyst covering more than 30 stocks including homebuilders, manufacturers and retailers. She was also the Global Head of Housing Research. More recently, from 2013 to 2014, she ran the finance group of a fast-growth, publicly traded real estate private equity firm and, as its CFO, oversaw budgeting, financial reporting, capital raising, investor and media relations, human resources and regulatory compliance. She started her career in the equity research department at Merrill Lynch.
Margaret is passionate about the opportunities for innovation across the U.S. housing industry, and she believes that 2018 was the inflection point for this much needed change. Recently her firm has advised and raised capital for several of the more innovative companies in the industry, including Entekra, RCI, Thomas James Homes, Thrive Home Builders, HercuWall and Tricor. She is frequently featured as a Professional Speaker at industry events hosted by leading organizations including ULI, NAHB, Bloomberg, IMN and Wells Fargo.
Whelan lives in New York and is a native of Ireland, having graduated from the University College of Dublin in 1994 with an honors Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce. She was a member of Institutional Investor’s All-America Research Team from 2002 to 2007 and was recognized by Forbes as being amongst Wall Street’s Best Stock Pickers and Best Analysts over the same period. In 2008, she was listed among Business & Finance’s Top 50 Most Influential Irish American Business Leaders. Previously she has held licenses by FINRA with the Series 24, 86 and 87, she currently holds the Series 7, 63 and 79 licenses.
Currently an active member of the National Association of Corporate Directors, WomenCorporateDirectors and Women in the Boardroom, she is a Financial Expert as defined by Section 407 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. In 2017, Whelan was recognized as a 'Director to Watch' in Director & Boards annual survey and in 2019 she was a featured contributor in the book Governance in the Digital Age.
